This October is bound to be extra spooky. While October is already a notoriously spooky month, the 13th of October falls on a Friday this year. As a result, we thought it only fitting to talk about one of the most popular horror franchises in the world: Friday the 13th. In this article, we’ll be giving a brief synopsis of each film and what strain we think pairs best with each movie. Be warned, there are spoilers ahead!
Friday the 13th
For those unfamiliar with the series, the first movie actually doesn’t feature Jason as we know him. Instead of a masked killer, Jason is simply a young boy who drowned in Crystal Lake in 1957. As a result of this tragic incident, Camp Crystal Lake has left a bad taste in the mouths of the local townspeople. Despite this, the camp is reopened and camp counselors begin refurbishing the cabins. One by one, these camp counselors are isolated and slaughtered by an unknown killer. Soon, the group of counselors is widdled down to one lone survivor, Alice.
As Alice tries to hide in one of the cabins, a lone middle-aged woman pulls up in a vehicle. Alice hysterically tries to tell this woman about the murders happening around camp. To Alice’s dismay, this woman is revealed to be Pamela Voorhees, Jason’s mother who blames the Camp Crystal Lake counselors for her son’s death. As a result, Mrs.Voorhees is revealed to be the one killing everyone around camp in hopes of seeking vengeance for her dead son. The two brawl until finally, Alice beheads Mrs.Voorhees.
Bahama Mama
In honor of Mama Vorhees, we’ve chosen the strain Bahama Mama to pair with this Friday the 13th film. Bahama Mama is a sativa-dominant hybrid strain that’s created by crossing Tropicana Cookies and Black Banana. Famous for its mouthwatering flavor, this tasty little bud has a super sweet and fruity berry flavor accented by fresh bananas and sour, citrusy oranges. The aroma is very similar, with a sour citrus overtone that’s accented by a bouquet of fresh fruits, including bananas, blueberries, and cherries. Alongside its delightful flavor profile, Bahama Mama delivers a high that’s just as desirable. When you smoke Bahama Mama, you may feel energized with a boost of creativity that is perfect for helping you get motivated.
Friday the 13th Part II
The story of Friday the 13th Part II begins 2 months later, as Alice is tormented by dreams of Mrs.Voorhees’ decapitation. While we would think she’s now safe from being murdered there’s one problem; Jason never died. In fact, he witnessed Alice beheading his mother. As a result, Jason seeks revenge by placing his mother’s decapitated head in Alice’s fridge for her to find. Upon her discovery of the head, Alice is stabbed with an ice pick.
The story then fast-forwards to five years later, as a new group of counselors begins their training at the now-condemned Camp Crystal Lake. Around the campfire, one of the counselors tells the story of Jason. The story ends with one of the counselors jumping out to scare the group in the Jason mask, only to reveal himself as the other counselor assures the group that Jason is dead. Alas, we know this isn’t true, and soon the counselors and folks surrounding the camp are killed off one by one. One of the counselors, Ginny, is the sole survivor of the attacks.
Alice
In honor of Jason’s first on-screen kill, we dedicate this next Friday the 13th Strain pick to Alice. Alice is a sativa-dominant strain that crosses Queen Mother with Congo. Known for its super tingly and creative high, Alice is a great choice for any sativa lover who is up for a wake-and-bake session on a kicked-back day. The high starts with tingly effects that are felt behind the eyes and in the back of the head. As a result, you may feel a little unfocused and giddy. Following this, a sense of creativity may take hold. In terms of taste, this strain has a sweet and sour woody flavor with a slightly earthy exhale. The aroma is very woody, with a fresh earthy overtone and touches of spicy herbs throughout.
Friday the 13th Part III
The third installment of the Friday the 13th series takes place directly after the first. Jason moves on from Camp Crystal Lake to a nearby lakefront property called Higgins Haven. At the same time, a young woman named Chris Higgins and her friends are on their way to visit this property for a vacation. Chris also happens to have encountered a disfigured stranger in the woods near this property two years earlier and hopes to overcome her fears on this return trip.
Unfortunately, Chris’ worst fears are realized as Jason kills each of her friends one by one. That being said, Chris is able to avenge her friends in the end. She is able to take an axe and swing it into Jason’s head, causing him to stumble over and presumably fall dead. As a result of the events that take place at Higgins Haven, poor Chris is left mentally disturbed and is taken off the property by police the next morning.
Lake of Fire
In honor of the site of all of Jason’s killings thus far, Camp Crystal Lake, we’ve chosen the strain Lake of Fire to pair with this Friday the 13th movie. Lake of Fire is a slightly sativa-dominant hybrid that crosses Gorilla Glue #4 with Kobain Kush. Lake of Fire has a crazy delicious taste of sweet chocolate kush with a hint of woody pine that compliments the smooth exhale perfectly. This strain smells like sweet and spicy pungent diesel with a lightly woody and chocolatey smell as you break apart the nugs. The Lake of Fire High is just as good as the taste, with powerfully uplifting and euphoric effects. The high hits you fast and hard with an extremely uplifted euphoria that lifts your mood. As a result, you’ll be left with a blissfully happy but slightly hazy effect.
Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter
Following the events of the previous movie, Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter begins on the day after Jason’s massacre at Higgin’s Haven. As police and paramedics clean up the scene, Jason’s body is discovered and hauled off to the morgue. However, the blow Chris dealt was not fatal, and Jason is still alive. Once in the morgue, Jason kills the onhand staff and makes his way back to Crystal Lake. Meanwhile, a group of friends heads out to stay in a house they’ve rented out on Crystal Lake.
Upon their arrival, the group meets Trish and her younger brother Tommy who live next door to the rental house. Once the group begins their vacation, you can guess what comes next. One by one, each of the friends is killed off by Jason. Jason eventually makes his way to the house of Trish and Tommy, where a series of events leads to Tommy swinging a machete right into Jason’s head and then repeatedly hacking him. Finally, the movie ends with Tommy visiting Trish in the hospital as they embrace.
Wonder Kid
In honor of this movie’s hero Tommy, we decided the most fitting strain for Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter is Wonder Kid. Wonder Kid is a heavy indica that crosses The White, Chedawg 91, Pre-98 Bubba Kush, and Buffalo Bill. The result is a strain with a varied terpene profile of hash, fuel, and coffee beans. The effects are predominately sedative but also deliver a potent rush that melts off the limbs. As a result, you may feel hungry and relaxed after smoking this strain.
Friday the 13th: A New Beginning
This next installment in the Friday the 13th series starts with a young Tommy walking through the woods. He stumbles upon a graveyard, where he comes across two grave robbers. These grave robbers are seen digging up Jason’s corpse. Then, Jason rises from the grave and murders the two grave robbers, and advances toward Tommy. It is then revealed that this was purely a nightmare that Tommy was having on the way to the Pinehurst halfway house.
It is here that Tommy aims to try to acclimate to a normal life alongside other residents at the institution. As a series of murders begin occurring nearby, it’s thought that Jason has somehow returned from the dead to kill again. Soon, Tommy comes face to face with the masked killer and manages to have him fall to his death. Alas, it is revealed that this killer was simply an imposter who adopted Jason’s M.O.
Inzane in the Membrane
Again honoring Tommy, who is now tormented by visions of Jason, we chose Inzane in the Membrane. Inzane in the Membrane is a sativa-dominant hybrid strain whose heritage is unknown. This strain is a favorite among many for its super heady and happy effects. As a result, this strain is perfect for a lazy day at home. It beings with an initial burst of cerebral energy, filling you with happiness and motivation. A warming physical tingle follows shortly thereafter, leaving your body relaxed as your mind soars higher and higher. This train has a sharply sour flavor with a light woody exhale. The aroma gives off notes of fresh herbs with a sour citrusy overtone that’s accented by a deliciously savory diesel.
Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives
Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives takes place 6 years after the murder of Jason Voorhees. Tommy is still haunted by his encounter and has been institutionalized ever since. As a result of this encounter, Tommy is constantly plagued by thoughts of Jason’s terror. To rid himself of this torment, Tommy sets out to cremate Jason’s body. He and his friend Hawes escape the institution and break into the cemetery where Jason is buried. Once they exhume Jason’s casket, Tommy goes into a fit of rage. He begins to stab the body over and over with a steel fence post.
Miraculously, lightning strikes the pole and brings Jason back from the dead in a Frankenstein-esque resurrection. Jason then kills Hawes with a superhuman punch through the heart and Tommy flees the scene. Straightaway Tommy makes his way to the former town of Crystal Lake, now named Forest Green, to warn the town of Jason’s return. Unfortunately, Tommy is written off as disturbed and is locked away. Ultimately, this leads to yet another killing spree at the hands of Jason Voorhees. By the end of his rampage, Jason is captured by Tommy. Tommy chains a boulder around Jason’s neck, after which Jason sinks and is effectively trapped at the bottom of Crystal Lake.
Zombie OG
In honor of the now living-dead mass murderer, we’ve chosen Zombie OG. Zombie OG is a heavily indica-dominant hybrid that crosses OG Kush with Blackberry. This strain boasts heavy effects and a fairly high THC average of 18% or more. Zombie OG’s high beings with an almost immediate onset of euphoria and mind-relieving head high. As a result, you may feel social, happy, and giggly. Following this, a hard-hitting body stone may leave you utterly sedated and feeling like a zombie. This strain has a surprisingly delicate earthy lavender pine aroma and a taste of sweet earthy floral pine.
Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood
This next installment of the Friday the 13th franchise takes place months after the previous film and is where the series begins to severely depart from the original. This film’s protagonist is young Tina Shepard, who discovered she has telekinetic powers at the age of 10. She made this discovery after accidentally unleashing these powers and causing the death of her father at the bottom of Crystal Lake. Ten years later, Tina is still ridden with guilt over her father’s death. As a result, her mother and her doctor decide to take her to a mental institution where her mother believes she will get help. Unfortunately, the reality of the situation is that her doctor hopes to study and exploit Tina’s telekinetic powers. He does this by returning her to her childhood home putting her under severe stress and triggering her telekinesis.
After a particularly stressful session, Tina bursts out of the house and heads to the dock where her father died. She senses a presence at the bottom of the lake, who she believes is her father. As a result, she uses her telekinesis to free the entity at the bottom of the lake. Unfortunately for her, this entity is not her dad…it’s Jason. After going on yet another killing spree, Jason comes back in contact with Tina. She uses her powers to successfully resurrect her father, who wraps Jason in chains and pulls him back down to the bottom of the lake.
Tina
In honor of this film’s protagonist, we’ve chosen the strain Tina to Pair with Friday the 13th Part VIII. Tina is an indica-dominant hybrid strain that crosses Starbud with another unknown indica-heavy strain. Tina is highly sought-after for its well-rounded high that has you flying before you drop off into a deep and peaceful sleep. The high starts with a lifted effect, filling your mind with a rushing sense of euphoric energy that infuses you with motivation and focus. This quickly turns sedative, leaving you fading away in both mind and body into a deeply relaxing and sleepy state. In terms of taste, this strain has a super spicy chocolate flavor with a rich coffee exhale. The aroma is similar, smelling like pungent earth and spicy coffee with a hint of chocolate and dank herbs.
Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan
This next Friday the 13th film takes place a year after the last film. The story starts as a boat’s anchor hits an underwater power line cable, causing a short circuit at the bottom of crystal lake. As a result, the undead Jason is once again resurrected. The next morning, a ship containing the senior class of Lakeview High is bound for New York City for the school’s graduation. However, before the ship sets sail, Jason somehow manages to grab a hold of the ship’s anchor and climbs aboard.
On the boat, Jason slaughters many of the passengers, including the captain. Despite escaping on lifeboats and arriving safely in New York City, the remaining passengers are still being hunted down by Jason. Soon Jason gets trapped inside a river of toxic waste, where he somehow reverts back into a child…If you’ve gotten this far into the list, we suggest you pack those bowls a little extra to get through the rest of the series
NYC Diesel
In honor of the city where it all goes down, we’ve chosen NYC Diesel to pair with Friday the 13th Part VIII. NYC Diesel is a sativa-dominant cross between Sour Diesel and an original Aghani or Hawaiian strain. NYC Diesel carries strong sativa genes from its Sour Diesel mother as well as a THC average >20%. The high from this strain comes with a strong shot of euphoria, a mood boost, and a spark of creativity. Along with this, a strong, pungent fuel flavor predominated in this Diesel descendant along with additional chemical notes.
Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday
Don’t let the title fool you, this is most certainly not the final Friday. It’s also quite a wild ride, so buckle up as we dive in. Somehow, Jason is once again resurrected and back at Crystal Lake. In addition to this, the FBI is also apparently in the midst of capturing him. Upon nearly killing an undercover FBI agent, Jason is gunned down and blown to smithereens by a grenade. Once he is completely decimated, his heart still manages to beat on its own.
His remains are sent to a morgue, where the coroner is somehow hypnotized by Jason’s heart and begins to…eat it? Yeah, I don’t know either. Regardless, this causes him to become posses by the spirit of Jason. This new Jason then does his killing thing until he is eventually stabbed in the chest, releasing the souls of his victims. As a result, numerous demonic hands burst from the ground and drag Jason to Hell.
Hell’s Fire
For what we hope are obvious reasons, we’ve chosen Hell’s Fire to paint with this installment of the Friday the 13th Series. This indica-dominant hybrid crosses Rascal’s OG Kush with SFV OG Kush. The Hell’s Fire high starts with a euphoric lift that boosts your outlook on life and leaves you feeling totally happy and at ease. As your mood builds, you’ll start to feel more and more relaxed with a touch of creative inspiration that leaves you feeling artistically inclined (if you can make yourself get up off the couch). Additionally, this strain has a sweet lemony diesel flavor with a savory smooth exhale. The aroma is incredibly pungent with a citrusy pine overtone and a heavy potent diesel effect that’s released as the buds are broken apart and smoked.
Freddy vs. Jason
This next Friday the 13th movie is, in all honesty, god awful. So, we’ll make this synopsis fairly brief. Basically, Freddy and Jason are currently both in hell. Freddy can’t escape hell until the children of Springwood remember him, so he plans on tricking Jason into getting them to remember him. So, he dresses up as Pamela Voorhees and tricks Jason into rising once again to slaughter the teens in Springwood so that they think Freddy is back. Eventually, a feud between Jason and Freddy is ongoing until eventually Jason is seen carrying Freddy’s severed head, which smirks and winks at the audience before laughing maniacally.
Mindscape
Before you dive into watching Freddy vs. Jason, you may want to load a couple of bowls of Mindscape to help you get through it (and hopefully forget it). Mindscape is a rare indica-dominant hybrid strain that crosses Headwrecker with Mendo Montage. The result is a lifting bud that packs a full-bodied high that filled you with deep relaxation and a touch of energy. Soon, both mind and body will start to settle into a state of deep relaxation and ease with a touch of a buzz as the high build and expands. Mindscape has a sweet and spicy grape flavor with a pungent skunky exhale. The aroma is also super pungent and skunk with a rich rotting herbal grape overtone.
Friday the 13th
This next installment of the Friday 13th movie returns us back to the source material. Following the events of the first movie, we fast-forward nearly 30 years as a group of friends arrive at Crystal Lake. They’ve come here on a camping trip in search of a supposed marijuana crop growing in the woods nearby. Everyone in the party, save for a girl named Whitney, is killed by Jason. Six weeks later, another group of people arrive at a summer cabin on Crystal Lake.
Meanwhile, Whitney’s brother Clay arrives at the lake in search of his sister. Clay visits the cabin the group of people is staying in, where a woman named Jenna offers to help him look for his sister. On their search, Clay and Jenna see Jason hauling a body into an abandoned camp house at Camp Crystal Lake. Clay eventually stumbles upon Jason’s lair, where he finds Whitney chained to a wall. Whitney eventually manages to stab Jason, after which she and Clay dump Jason’s corpse into the Lake. Of course, we know that Jason doesn’t go down so easily. Just before they leave, Jason bursts through the wooden dock and grabs Whitney.
Memory Loss
For an utterly forgettable movie, we’ve chosen a strain that will make you just as forgetful. Memory Loss is a sativa-dominant hybrid strain created through a cross of the heavy Amnesia Haze and Face Off OG strains. This powerhouse bud packs a hefty cerebral punch that leaves you unfocused and dazed for hours on end. The high starts with an almost immediate onset that smashes into your brain, leaving you completely out of it and unable to focus at all. Memory Loss buds have a fruit bubblegum, flavor with a spicy pepper overtone. The aroma is very earthy and fruit with a spicy herbal effect that turns pungent as the nugs are burned.
Jason X
Finally, the Friday the 13th series ends with Jason X. In 2008, Jason is captured by the U.S. government and is being held at the Crystal Lake Research Facility. While unveiling him for further research, the blanket supposedly covering Jason is actually covering a dead private. Having broken free from his restraints, Jason goes on to kill everyone in the room and freezes himself alongside government scientist Rowan LaFontaine. Now, the year is 2455. Earth has become too polluted to support life and humanity has moved to a new planet creatively named Earth 2. Three students on a field trip to the original Earth enter the Crystal Lake facility and find the still-frozen Jason and Rowan who they bring aboard their spaceship. Eventually, Jason does what he does best and comes back to life to kill those aboard the ship.
Space Face
For the Friday the 13th movie set in space, we’ve chosen Space Face. Space Face is a slightly indica-dominant hybrid strain created by crossing Skywalker OG and Face Off OG BX1. This strain is bound to send you out of this world with its heady and sedating effects. You’ll feel the cerebral effects almost immediately as your mind is filled with an expansive sense of euphoria. A deeply sedative body high comes next, locking you to the couch as your mind slips further into the high. This bud has a sweet and sugary berry candy flavor with hints of cherries on the exhale. The aroma is fruity and earthy with a notable hint of spicy herbs that perfectly accent the sweet berry overtone.
