About the Brand
High 5 is a woman owned Legacy Licensed Manufacturer of Cannabis infused products located in sunny Santa Fe, New Mexico. They believe in using the freshest, highest quality, natural ingredients in their recipes. They approach cannabis as another fine ingredient to be studied and savored. High 5’s chocolates are organic, fair trade, peanut free, gluten-free, and non-GMO.
High 5 is also dedicated to providing products that are sustainable, organic, and natural. As a result, High 5 will never use palm oil in any of their products. Though they are aware that it would greatly reduce their cost, they believe it is worth more to utilize healthier ingredients that don’t contribute to the deforestation of the environment.
Why No Palm Oil?
Health Risks
There are several reasons to stray away from consuming palm oil. Firstly, it just isn’t good for you. The Center for Science in the Public Interest claims that since palm oil is high in saturated fat and low in polyunsaturated fat it could promote heart disease. This is because saturated fat raises your “bad” LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, which are both risk factors for heart disease.
Environmental Impact
Secondly, farming palm oil has a very negative impact on the environment. Palm oil plantations are under increasing scrutiny for their effects on the environment, including loss of carbon-sequestering forest land.
There is also concern over the displacement and disruption of the human and animal population due to palm oil cultivation. A large proportion of palm oil expansion occurs at the expense of biodiversity and ecosystems in the countries it is produced. Currently, a third of all mammal species in Indonesia are considered to be critically endangered as a consequence of this unsustainable development that is rapidly encroaching on their habitat.
Furthermore, the palm oil industry is linked to major issues such as habitat degradation, climate change, animal cruelty, and indigenous rights abuses in the countries where it is produced. This is because the land and forests must be cleared for the development of the palm oil plantations. According to the World Wildlife Fund, an area the equivalent size of 300 football fields of rainforest is cleared each hour to make way for palm oil production.
This large-scale deforestation is pushing many species to extinction. In fact, findings show that if nothing changes, species like the orangutan could become extinct in the wild within the next 10-15 years. Meanwhile, the species like the Sumatran tigers are estimated to have less than 3 years until they face the threat of extinction.
