It was here that a gathering of local farmers started selling their produce. Soon, homemade bread was added and local crafters/artists began joining the farmers at the Market. Since 2009, Market vendors have been relocated to the seven full blocks of Downtown Main Street. With this expansion, the Market flowered with its now-familiar colorful canopies and open spaces for gatherings and entertainment. The Rio Grande was built as a movie theater in 1926 and was the focal point of downtown Las Cruces. The theater served not just as a place to enjoy movies but as a community gathering place until its closure in 1997. Over the following 8 years, the Doña Ana Arts Council oversaw a complete renovation and reinvention of the 393-seat theater that cost a whopping $2.2 million. Thanks to this, the theater reopened in 2005 and has been home to movie screenings and live performances ever since. It also offers very good year-round viewing of desert mules, deer, and coyotes. Also watch for black-throated sparrows, ladder-backed woodpeckers, black-tailed gnatcatchers, lesser nighthawks, Scott’s orioles, cactus wrens, desert cottontails, and collared and tree lizards in the spring and summer.

Plus, you can join them on the second Saturday of each month for new exhibitions in their main gallery and tiny room.
