The first eco-conscious farm we want to show some love for Earth Day is Buddy Boy Farm. Buddy Boy has been farming for over 40 years. In that time, he’s grown thousands of organic acres using age-old natural methods along with a few modern twists. When weed first came to the farm, he planted it in rich soil and watered it with pure spring water. To this day, Buddy Boy doesn’t use any harmful chemicals to ensure 100% pure clean flower.

When growing their cannabis, they use many of the same techniques learned on their farm over 40 years of growing fruit and vegetables. Additionally, they’ve developed special twists to ensure that their cannabis is clean and healthful. For example, they rely on the weekly releases of several beneficial predators as their main line of defense against damaging insects. They have found that a complex of 7 or 8 different predatory mites, used regularly, along with the tiny stethorus beetle do a great job of keeping many pests in check.

Additionally, they employ the use of natural pesticides like neem tree oil, eucalyptus bark oil, lemon grass oil, rosemary oil, and canola oil for their disease-fighting and insecticidal properties. They will also occasionally spray bacillus thuringiensis, which is a naturally occurring bacterial preparation that affects only some early-stage Lepidoptera. Hydrogen peroxide is also used from time to time to clean things up.

Moving along our list of eco-conscious farms in honor of Earth Day we have Sweetwater Farms. At Sweetwater Farms, their grow is set up in a very unique way compared to almost any other commercial grower. They believe in growing the natural way, by using living soil as a medium to house their plants. Additionally, they use organic tea blends to feed them. These are key components to developing such fresh, terpene-rich profiles in their flower.

Growing cannabis in “living soil” has become a dying art, but it is by far the most natural way to produce the cleanest cannabis. When working with living organisms there are always challenges. For example, the soil can be messier compared to other grow mediums. That being said, the outcome is what the team at Sweetwater is in the game for. Like a fine wine, soil that is harvested, composted, and fed correctly will only get better with age. As they continue to use their “Sweet Soil” over time, the terpene profiles, freshness, and even THC content will continue to trend in the right direction, creating the cleanest cannabis on the market.

Another great eco-conscious farm we want to highlight for Earth Day is Sky High Gardens. At Sky High Gardens, one of their efforts toward sustainable growing is the use of beneficial insects. These insects are a powerful force for good, seeking out to destroy mites, aphids, thrips, and other insects that eat their crops. Another effort towards sustainability that they make at Sky High Gardens is reducing their carbon footprint. By investing in new technology, they have decreased their power consumption by up to 63% per pound of cannabis since 2015. Further, they utilize passive cooling when available and have begun a new initiative to provide their rich soil to local farms after use.
